Files Hidden by Virus. How to Unhide Them?

The Problem

My girlfriend was panicked when she found out her Final Year Project files were missing from her thumb drive. She thought the files were already gone by a virus attack or were accidentally deleted by her friends.

After I did some analysis, I found out the files are still there but a virus had modified the file properties to ‘Hidden’ and hide all files in the thumb drive.

Although she tried to “Show Hidden Files” but the virus does not allow her to view them. Luckily, she has a very intelligent and clever boyfriend who guides her on how to overcome this problem.

The Solution

1. Insert the thumb drive to an empty USB slot. Take note the drive letter. For an example, F:.

2. Press Windows + R, and type “cmd“. Ok.

3. Enter this command,

attrib -s -h -r f:/*.* /s /d

4. Press Enter and wait for the command to execute.

5. Open the thumb drive and you should see the files that were hidden by the virus.

Conclusion

Hopefully with this guide she can help her friends to solve the same problem. And yes, I also hope this guide will solve your files hidden by virus problem too. BTW believe me, university is the best place for virus to spread!

PS: All folders in your thumb drive become shorcut? I got the solution here… 🙂

PPS: If your PC still having problem, you can either scan your PC with antivirus or repair it to speed up by using Registry Easy.

    wow… i thought, its not gonna work, because i type what you said and the box appear telling me that there are no hard disk in the drive.. but i remember you made a note about the drive letter… and then when i type it again.. boom.. its there already.. thanks man.. it really help.. now i can help my friends too.. but i will not tell them how.. hahah.. just kidding.

    can some please help me? i really dont understand. i cannot see my music on the folder is says folder is empy but when i checked the properties is written 513 files 🙁 someone help me with those command :(( any great heart there?

People like you who offer this kind of great help free of charge just out of kindness should be greatly thanked – Thought I had lost all the birthday pictures of my little son’s 1st birthday!!! – To all virus creators out there: you guys think you are so cool & smart but have no empathy for families who will be greatly hurt by your stupid viruses. Is it really fair, cool, or smart to make families lose pictures & documents that mean nothing to you but are very important to them?     Im really pissed off with my flash drive. I already tired several time this format attrib -s -h -r f:/*.* /s /d but still i cant find my files i dont know why. My flash drive is very stubborn unfortunately i have so many important documents in this files can you please help me to unhide my files in my flash memory?

    Hi, well yes, I got the virus that hid all my files and made heaps of shortcuts. So I’ve killed the virus, deleted the shortcuts, but now I can not unhide the files and the permission has been taken from me.
    I run cmd and type in what you say, but it says access denied. So now I don’t know what to do. I hate having all these hidden files.

    I have tried unhide.exe and the command prompt string, neither have worked. when i type the attrib string in command prompt, i get ‘access denied’ to the c: drive. my folders are still hidden. any suggestions?

    thank you so much! got a virus on monday and just tried this trick. Worked and I run Windows 7, but also have carbonite. don’t want to restore data till i find the virus, but now I can see all my business files! you saved me!

    Hi, thanks for the command for the pen drives, fixed my problem.

    Is there a command to do the same with the PC hard drives, I suspect the same thing happened and it has hidden the photos on my friends PC?

    Any help would be much appreciated.
