GoodSync is a synchronization software which enables you to synchronize your files and automatically backup files between desktops, laptops and external drives. It also can be used to synchronize your files to and from FTP, WebDAB and Windows Mobile phones and PDAs.
I started using GoodSync after I using RoboForm, a password generator and manager software. With GoodSync, I can synchronize my passwords from the USB thumbdrive to my local PC in just two clicks. I use it as a backup procedure just in case my USB thumbdrive got stolen or I accidentally deleted the passwords from it.
GoodSync’s interface is easy to understand and not complex even for the new users. First, choose the source and the destination location. Then, click on Analyze to analyze the changes or differences between both locations. Finally, click Sync to synchronize your files. After the process is finished, you will have the exact files in both locations. You can go here to read the explanation in details.
Actually, file synchronization is different from file backup. In file synchronization, both mediums will have the exact same data and the latest updates. But in file backup, only one medium will have the same data and latest updates. The illustrations shown below explain the differences between them.

If you asked me, why do we need this software, my answer to that question is simple. Prepare for the future. We don’t know what will happen to our data in the future. So, it is better to take precautious action and synchronize our data in many places. In case one of our storage mediums got problem, we still have the exact files in another location. So we will not start our work from the scratch. We just continue from what we have stopped earlier. It saves our time and saves our money.
GoodSync is freeware but has limitation like the number of files and jobs that it can syncrhonize. But, if you think GoodSync is a good software for your company, investing USD29.95 should be no problem for your business. It is better to spend some money for a software than losing the whole business.
I use Syncback for all my synchronization and backup needs. The free version does everything you need and doesn’t have any limitation whatsoever. You can even synchronize directories with selected subdirectories rather than everything in it.
I use it to back up my entire system into my external hard disk as well as synchronize my music folders.
On a secondary note, there is another way to synchronize small amounts of data between different computers. Either by using a program that I use called Dropbox or another one Syncplicity. Both has its advantages and disadvantages but both rely on its own external server to store and sync files between systems.
I actually love the RoboForm software myself. I use it all of the time and it takes all of the menial everyday tasks that I have to perform on my computer daily and shortens them extremely! What once took me fifteen minutes to complete now takes me only one second because RoboForm does the same task with just one click. I prefer to use DropBox (getdropbox.com) for syncing between my PC and laptop. It eliminates the need to bring around a thumbdrive (tho I still hook my 8gb kingston thumbdrive on my keys and bring it everywhere with me) using a specified folder.
A folder called ‘My Dropbox’ is created in the My Documents and any changes made within that folder (edits, deletion, adding new files) is made on both sides. Not only that, the changes are uploaded on their website and all the versions are saved (in case u want to revert to older versions).
One downside, it works with internet access. For another sync program that works without internet access is Sync Toy
