Supposedly I should write about this in my Ubuntu Newbie Malaysia blog but I think it is better to mention it here.
So, did you know that new Ubuntu, version 8.04 codename Hardy Heron, will be out in less than two days from now? They said that there are many new features and softwares in version 8.04, like…
New Core System Features:
- GNOME 2.22
- Linux kernel 2.6.24
- PolicyKit
- PulseAudio
- Xorg 7.3
New Software Functions:
- Firefox 3 Beta 5
- Brasero
- Transmission
- World Clock Applet
- Vinagre
- Uncomplicated Firewall
- Totem
- Inkscape
New and Improved Support:
- ActiveDirectory integration
- iSCSI support
- Memory Protection
- SELinux Support
- umenu
- Virtualization
- Wubi
- Installation
- LTSP
I am not sure why they put Firefox 3 Beta as the default browser. In my opinion it is better to just stick with the latest stable Firefox version which is Firefox 2. At least people will not facing into troubles if suddenly Firefox 3 Beta not functioning in their system.
Anyway, what I like the most in this new version is EasyCrypt which is the simple GUI for TrueCrypt is already ported into Ubuntu Hardy. Now you will not have to enter to terminal and type the syntax to run, encrypt or decrypt your data using TrueCrypt. EasyCrypt will do it for you. I have been using this application for quite sometime and it is really useful.
Ok, so we already know what are the new features and softwares in Ubuntu Hardy Heron, but how to upgrade? You can upgrade directly from the internet or you can choose to request the free Ubuntu CD from ShipIt.
For me, I think I will download the ISO image and upgrade from it. And at the same time I will request the free CD just to keep it for future use. How about you?
I’ve just made a cd request… not sure if my old p3 computer could run it or now le…

With the new Wubi installation, i cant wait to try it.
Steady everyone… Tomorrow will be the day… 😀
I would live very much to install it. I’m running Ubuntu Gutsy right now, I wonder simply upgrading will be safe or do I have to reinstall from my partition.
This will be my first upgrade too. I also don’t have any experience in upgrading ubuntu version. Maybe after I successfully upgrade it to the latest version, I will make an article about how to upgrade.
