What is Solid State Disk (SSD)?

Do you know about Solid State Disk (SSD)? SSD is a technology that currently being used in data storage devices especially for server applications and system. This technology uses solid-state memory to store data and commonly composed of either DRAM volatile memory or NAND flash non-volatile memory.

In SSD technology, no parts are moving like the normal hard disks you are currently using. So the data is less fragile and the disk is very silent and smooth.

Other than that, the seek time and the startup time is very fast because SSD does not need to spin up until the rotation speed is achieved. Only hard disks need to spin up to ready state to start its operations.

Moving parts slow down the disk performance.

SSD can access the data randomly in the same time whatever the storage location. It also does not depend on the read/write interface head and imune to strong magnetic fields.

Because of the technology is new, the cost per gigabyte of SSD storage is very high. That is the only downside of SSD as for now. But probably, after a new data storage technology come out, the price for SSD might be cheaper and many people can afford to buy it.

Currently, I am looking for a new netbook by Dell, Mini 9. This netbook is currently not officially available in Malaysia yet but we can buy from this seller for RM1175.

For your information, Mini 9 is equipped with SSD but the capacity is very, very small. I think this netbook is good for bloggers because the size is small, light and mobility. Maybe you should buy one too.

Weblogs Centre is Back!

At the early of my blogging journey, Weblogs Center (the domain has expired) is the one of the Malaysia bloggers forum that I always active. That forum has helped me a lot to learn about blogging and I can meet the other bloggers from Malaysia too.

But after the domain has expired and the owner leaves to Indonesia, Weblogs Center has been abandoned. It has been forgotten and new bloggers never know that Weblogs Center was once existed.

Because we (the former forum members) think that we still need Weblogs Center, we has discussed together and developed our new Malaysia bloggers forum.

How to rename folders or tags in Google Reader?

Google Reader is my main RSS feed reader. It is online 24/7 and catches all my subscribed feeds everyday. Google Reader does not installed on my computer and so I don’t lose any hard disk space because all the feeds are stored in Google server. Google Reader is fast and convenient, but it lacks one feature that I think it is very useful, folders or tags renaming function.

Although Google Reader does not support that feature, but there is a way to rename or move your RSS feeds to another folder. Let say we want to rename Folder A to Folder B. Here is how to do it.

Go to Settings and click on the Subscriptions tab.
In “Filter by name, tag, or URL” field, enter the current folder name that you want to rename to filter out that folder. Eg: Folder A.
In “Change folder…” dropdown list, choose New Folder… and enter the new folder name. Eg: Folder B.
Now, click “All # subscriptions” to select all feeds under Folder A and choose Folder B in More actions… dropdown list to add that feeds into Folder B.
Without deselect the selected feeds, choose Folder A from Remove tag under More actions… dropdown list.

Now, your feeds are moved or renamed to Folder B. So far, I only know this way to rename folders or tags in Google Reader. If you found any other easier method, please share it with us.

Twitter - What do you Tweet about?

I have a Twitter account but I really seldom to update my Twitter page. Everyday, I see many of the persons that I following their Twitter updates always have new messages on their page. They always have something in their mind and tweet about it.

I do not know what should I do with my Twitter. If you see my Twitter page, I only have less than 10 Twitter updates. All the updates were sent through the Twitter website.

Twitter is very flexible. You can send the update via their website, mobile phone or from instant messaging client. Some prefer to update by using their mobile phone because the mobile phone is always at their hand. But for me, I prefer to update from the website because I can type faster than typing from the mobile phone keypad.

Although I can update from anywhere, but the problem is, I need ideas to update my Twitter. Currently, I still trying to learn the trend in Twitter-ing. Mostly I see that Twitter users typed about their new blog post. It is like promoting your blog by using Twitter. I think it is a good idea but how long do you want to use Twitter as your blog promoting platform? Maybe need a more aggressive idea that will make your friends to love following your Tweets.

Picasa - Digital Photo Organizer from Google

Many of you may already heard about Picasa, one of the Google product which is used to organize photos more easily. I just bought a digital camera, Sony DSC-H50, a few weeks ago and already took about 200 photos by using that camera. All the photos are stored in my external hard drive sorted by date in their respective folders.

Although the photos are well managed (maybe) in the folders but I still need to use Picasa because in Picasa I can view multiple photos at once. It is also really easy to jump from a photo in a folder to the another photo from a different folder.

With Picasa, I can tag the photos that I want for better future searching. Let say if the photo is about macro snapped, I tagged that photo with “macro” and the next time when I want to search for macro photos, I just search for “macro” tag from the search field and Picasa will display the photo immediately.

Picasa also support albums. With albums, I can organize my photos based on the event or where I took that photos. I can create many albums as I want because there is no limitations in creating the albums. When I put that photo into an album, that photo is not copied to the album but Picasa points that photo to the album. So we lose no hard disk space when using Picasa.

Another thing that I like about Picasa because it is light. It uses about 5MB of RAM which I think it is not that much especially for nowadays computers which equipped with 2GB of RAM. Picasa also took about one to two seconds to start from my laptop. In my opinion it is fast compared to other photo organizers like ACDSee and Ulead PhotoExplorer which take longer time to start.

Picasa is not just a normal photo organizer. It also has photo editing tools like crop, auto contrast, auto colour, effects and many thing else. But I never use that features because I have Adobe Photoshop to do that. I just using Picasa as my photo organizer to keep my photos more manageable.

But the one thing that I really want Picasa to has in the upcoming version is to integrate with Flickr. I have a Flickr account and I always upload my photos to Flickr. If Picasa supports Flickr, it will be the best photo organizer that I ever used.

EarthView - Have the Earth on your desktop

Our Earth is really amazing and beautiful. I really wanted to see the Earth from the above space with my naked eyes but there will have no chance that I can travel to the outer space to do that. Although I cannot see the Earth from the above side but there is a software that can put the Earth onto my desktop. And I can see the Earth anytime when I needed by looking to the desktop.

EarthView from DeskSoft is a software that enables you to have the Earth on your desktop. It is a dynamic wallpaper and screensaver changer where it will change the daylight view of the Earth at a specific interval time that you can set.

I have tested three EarthView alike softwares, EarthView, DesktopEarth, and EarthDesk. After installed and tested the above three, I found that EarthView is the most customizable and have the glob projection which I like the most. You also can set the globe to appear at any place on your desktop and you can project the view from any direction.

Like in the picture above, I place the globe at the bottom right of my desktop with coordinate 25X 25Y. It is really amazing to watch your country from that location and see the changes of the day and night.

Try it by yourself and tell me what is your opinion about this software. If you don’t think EarthView is good, you can test the other two softwares that I mentioned above. Choose which one that is really suits you. For me, I will stick using EarthView because I can view the Earth in globe projection.

I have Windows XP installed in my PC and have a chance to try Vista Start Menu with pro registration. My first impression about this software is, quite difficult at the first time but very convenient after several times usage.

But Vista Start Menu is not like our normal Vista start menu. It is totally different. The thing that I like the most is the folder segmentation that it provides. Usually, when we install new software, the program folder created will be placed at different area at the Start Menu. When this happen, we will take some time to find where the program folder located. But with Vista Start Menu, you will able to find the folder much faster.

Vista Start Menu is the convenient alternative to the plain Start menu you find in Windows XP and Windows Vista. The program uses your cognitive abilities (visual memory, reflexes,etc.); however, while it is easily understandable for beginners, it is also highly efficient for experienced users.

Vista Start Menu will segmented your start menu for easy program folder finding. This is because your mind will remember the location easily. When you see the same folder location so many times, the next time when you want to look for that folder again, your mind will tell you that the folder is located at this, this area. So it will make you faster in locate the program folder. It is like you type the keyboard without looking at it.

Synchronize your files with GoodSync

GoodSync is a synchronization software which enables you to synchronize your files and automatically backup files between desktops, laptops and external drives. It also can be used to synchronize your files to and from FTP, WebDAB and Windows Mobile phones and PDAs.

I started using GoodSync after I using RoboForm, a password generator and manager software. With GoodSync, I can synchronize my passwords from the USB thumbdrive to my local PC in just two clicks. I use it as a backup procedure just in case my USB thumbdrive got stolen or I accidentally deleted the passwords from it.

GoodSync’s interface is easy to understand and not complex even for the new users. First, choose the source and the destination location. Then, click on Analyze to analyze the changes or differences between both locations. Finally, click Sync to synchronize your files. After the process is finished, you will have the exact files in both locations. You can go here to read the explanation in details.

Actually, file synchronization is different from file backup. In file synchronization, both mediums will have the exact same data and the latest updates. But in file backup, only one medium will have the same data and latest updates. The illustrations shown below explain the differences between them.

If you asked me, why do we need this software, my answer to that question is simple. Prepare for the future. We don’t know what will happen to our data in the future. So, it is better to take precautious action and synchronize our data in many places. In case one of our storage mediums got problem, we still have the exact files in another location. So we will not start our work from the scratch. We just continue from what we have stopped earlier. It saves our time and saves our money.

GoodSync is freeware but has limitation like the number of files and jobs that it can syncrhonize. But, if you think GoodSync is a good software for your company, investing USD29.95 should be no problem for your business. It is better to spend some money for a software than losing the whole business.

Advertlets Still Hasn’t Paid Me Yet

On 8th January 2008, I requested to cashout my earnings from Advertlets. The amount that I want to cashout is RM160. Although it is not much but at that time I was a student. With RM160, I can buy lots of things and I can eat at McDonalds. Well…you know, students. Like to eat fastfood when they have extra cash in their hands.

But untill now, I still did not get any cheques from Advertlets. The status still showing processing. I have sent support request but they never replied. I don’t know why they still keep my cashout in processing although 8 months have past.

I have stopped using Advertlets on my websites since the case where they forgot to renew their domain. It was a havoc in blogsphere when all websites that have Advertlets ads on it will be forwarded to another parked domain.

I am not sure but maybe they don’t want to pay me because I stopped putting their ads on my websites. But if they want to do business, they should pay the publishers’ earning because that money is belong to the publishers. Publishers help them to promote their campaigns so they should get what they have earned.

If any Advertlets’ representatives read this message, you can keep that money or give to someone else or other publishers who want it. I don’t want that money anymore. Thank you for your great campaigns and promotions and everything.

But my advice is, if you want to do business, do it properly. Don’t make your business lose its reputation just because a small thing like this.
