Use HTTPS When Login To Social Websites

Everyday, I will login into my Facebook account to check the updates from my friends and also to reply their comments. But at the Facebook login page, I always change the protocol from HTTP to HTTPS (also known as Hyper Text Transfer Protocol with Secure Socket Layer) before I login. This is to ensure when I clicked the submit button, my username and password transmitted across the network to the Facebook server are secured.

Use HTTPS instead of HTTP

Why is it important to login using HTTPS instead of HTTP? From what I know, when you browsing using HTTP, the data sending from your browser to the server is not encrypted. A hacker with his knowledge and skills will able to capture the packets and can read the data as plain text.

But when using HTTPS, the data will be encrypted with the server public key and only the server can decrypt back the data with its own private key. So, even though a hacker can captures your packets but he will not able to interpret the data because he don’t have the private key to decrypt it.

Facebook 1024 bits Public Key

Normally, online shopping and online banking websites such as Maybank2U using this protocol as default to ensure the security of their customer login information. Like Maybank2U, it using 1024 bits key length for the public key and private key same like with Facebook.

Down Or Is It Just Me? – Find Out Website Online Status

Yesterday, CypherHackz.Net and all websites under its same server were not accessible. At first, I thought it was only me having the connection problem but actually other people also having the same problem. It cause by a network interruption at Atlanta when one of the cores connecting the server farms was down.

Based from a link given by Sam (the owner of ServerFreak), I found a website that will check websites online status. The website will help you to find out whether only you are having the website down problem or other people also having the same website inaccessibility like you.

Down Or Is It Just Me? is a useful web service to find out website online status. It will check whether the website URL you entered is online or down.

Some people might think the server is currently down when they cannot access to the website and get “unable to connect” error message. But actually, only he or she having the connection problem whereas other people can access the website as usual.

So, if you think that your website is down, please make sure to check with Down Or Is It Just Me? first before you make the assumption. Probably your website is really down or only you having the connection problem.

But for my case, it is true that the server was not accessible because of the network connecting Malaysia (using P1 Wimax) route to Atlanta was down.

At the early of my blogging journey, Weblogs Center (the domain has expired) is the one of the Malaysia bloggers forum that I always active. That forum has helped me a lot to learn about blogging and I can meet the other bloggers from Malaysia too.

But after the domain has expired and the owner leaves to Indonesia, Weblogs Center has been abandoned. It has been forgotten and new bloggers never know that Weblogs Center was once existed.

Because we (the former forum members) think that we still need Weblogs Center, we has discussed together and developed our new Malaysia bloggers forum.

Twitter – What do you Tweet about?

I have a Twitter account but I really seldom to update my Twitter page. Everyday, I see many of the persons that I following their Twitter updates always have new messages on their page. They always have something in their mind and tweet about it.

I do not know what should I do with my Twitter. If you see my Twitter page, I only have less than 10 Twitter updates. All the updates were sent through the Twitter website.

Twitter is very flexible. You can send the update via their website, mobile phone or from instant messaging client. Some prefer to update by using their mobile phone because the mobile phone is always at their hand. But for me, I prefer to update from the website because I can type faster than typing from the mobile phone keypad.

Although I can update from anywhere, but the problem is, I need ideas to update my Twitter. Currently, I still trying to learn the trend in Twitter-ing. Mostly I see that Twitter users typed about their new blog post. It is like promoting your blog by using Twitter. I think it is a good idea but how long do you want to use Twitter as your blog promoting platform? Maybe need a more aggressive idea that will make your friends to love following your Tweets.

Sign in to Gmail via Secure Internet Connection

It is recommend for you to have a secure connection network between your PC and the Gmail server. Let say if you login to Gmail using a public network like wireless or hotspot in Starbucks, someone can tamper or see the sensitive information transferred from your PC to the Gmail server. This is because the network you are using is not secure and is open to everybody.

Non-secure networks make it easier for someone to impersonate you and gain full access to your Google account, including any sensitive data it may contain like bank statements or online log-in credentials.

To check whether you are in a secure connection or not, check that the protocol that being used is https at the address bar. And also, there is a Lock icon at the bottom right corner of your browser (Firefox).

When you have both of them, that’s mean you are in a secure connection. No one can tamper or modify or spying on the data transferred between you and the Gmail server. You are now safe and secure to send emails, at least.

Enable the function

To enable this function, in Gmail, go to Settings. Under General tab, scroll down to the bottom and tick Always use https at Browser connection. After you clicked on the Save Changes button, Gmail will log you out and you have to login back but now, you will use https protocol.

Take note, when you are in a secure connection, Gmail speed will be decreased. This is because every data that you transfer will be encrypted first before your browser can send the data to the Gmail server.

Please note that selecting ‘Always use https’ will prevent you from accessing Gmail via HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol). In addition, it may make Gmail a bit slower. If you trust the security of your network, you can turn this feature off at any time.

Although it is not necessary to always connect to Gmail in a secure connection, but in my opinion, it is better to have this function enabled. We don’t know, maybe today, tomorrow, or later, someone might able to get our sensitive data just because we are too lazy or don’t want to use the security feature that have been provided by Google.

Google Chrome – A web browser from Google

Google Chrome (not sure why the webpage still not showing up) is a web browser that will be released publicly to more than 100 countries by tomorrow. Google claims that their new browser can add values to the internet users and also help to drive innovation on the web.

In my opinion, Google Chrome will be the best web browser and can beat Firefox very easily. This is because Google have studied everything from the data that they have collected from us before. Especially for those who are using Google Toolbar and Google Desktop. From the information they have gathered, Google can learn how the users think and how to make a powerful web browser that can give what the users want. After few years of research, here it comes, Google Chrome.

And also, if you use Google Chrome, Google will get more information and data about you. From the web history, emails, websites and everything that you do using Google Chrome, they will know. I am not sure whether this is true or not because I don’t have any facts to prove it. But still, if you think carefully, you will see how Google is trying to be evil. They try to make all people using their products such as Google Analytics, Google Earth, Google Toolbar, Google Desktop, Google Mail, etc. and at the same time give them more information for their next product.

Anyway, everything that I said here is just my opinion. I have no intention to blame Google products or what so ever.
