I’m using Internet Download Manager (IDM) to take care all my downloads. Once it finished downloading a file, IDM will automatically call Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) to start scanning the downloaded file for any viruses or malwares that can harm my computer system.

By default, IDM will not pass the downloaded file to KIS. If you want to do so, you need to configure it from the IDM options menu. Here I’ll show you how:

Open up the Options menu in IDM.

Click on the Downloads tab.

Under ‘Virus scanner program’, browse your Kaspersky Internet Security or Kaspersky Anti Virus application and select it. eg: avp.exe

In the ‘Command line parameters‘ field, type in: scan [File]

Finally, make sure to click Ok.

Now, whenever IDM finished downloading a file, it will request your Kaspersky scanner to scan the file automatically. So you don’t have to run the antivirus scanner manually. Everything has been taken care by your IDM. Easy isn’t it?

The Problem

My girlfriend was shocked when she found out her Final Year Project files were missing from her thumb drive. She thought the files were already gone because of a virus attack or accidentally deleted by her friends. But actually the files were there but a virus has hidden all the files inside the thumb drive.

Although she tried to “Show Hidden Files” but the virus does not allow her to view them. Luckily, she has a very intelligent and clever boyfriend who guides her on how to overcome this problem.

The Solution

1. Insert the thumb drive to an empty USB slot. Take note the drive letter. For an example, F:.

2. Press Windows + R, and type “cmd“. Ok.

3. Enter this command,

attrib -s -h -r f:/*.* /s /d

4. Press Enter and wait for the command to execute.

5. Open the thumb drive and you should see the files that were hidden by the virus.

Conclusion

I am not sure whether my girlfriend’s laptop has been attacked by a virus or only her thumb drive has been infected. But anyway, at least I have teach her how to solve this kind of infection. After this, she can help her friends to fix the same problem.

Btw believe me, universities are the best places for virusses to spread!

Google Reader is my main RSS feed reader. It is online 24/7 and catches all my subscribed feeds everyday. Google Reader does not installed on my computer and so I don’t lose any hard disk space because all the feeds are stored in Google server. Google Reader is fast and convenient, but it lacks one feature that I think it is very useful, folders or tags renaming function.

Although Google Reader does not support that feature, but there is a way to rename or move your RSS feeds to another folder. Let say we want to rename Folder A to Folder B. Here is how to do it.

Go to Settings and click on the Subscriptions tab.

In “Filter by name, tag, or URL” field, enter the current folder name that you want to rename to filter out that folder. Eg: Folder A.

In “Change folder…” dropdown list, choose New Folder… and enter the new folder name. Eg: Folder B.

Now, click “All # subscriptions” to select all feeds under Folder A and choose Folder B in More actions… dropdown list to add that feeds into Folder B.

Without deselect the selected feeds, choose Folder A from Remove tag under More actions… dropdown list.

Now, your feeds are moved or renamed to Folder B. So far, I only know this way to rename folders or tags in Google Reader. If you found any other easier method, please share it with us.

Type a lot! Yup, there is no way you can type faster if you not punching the keyboard everyday.

When I was young, I want to type faster like the person in a movie that I watched. It would be very cool when you can type faster and don’t have to see the keyboard while you typing. Then, I thought I need a typing software to practice but that software does not really help me. I make a lot of errors if I use the typing technique. But in case you want to try the software, here is the link.

Then, after few years, I start blogging. From there, I type a lot because everyday I have new ideas for my blog. I did some researches and type what I have found. Day after day, my typing skill has improved. I can type without have to see the keyboard and also can type more faster than before.

When my friends asked me how I can type faster, I told them to type a lot. From there, you will able to type faster without have to learn the technique at all. If you have no blogs, use the instant messaging or forums as a practice. Good luck!

I have installed many softwares lately and was shocked when found out that my right-click context menu has many applications. Most of them are not even use. Some softwares allow you to disable the context menu from its options settings. But some of them don’t have the options and not allow you to remove the applications from the context menu.

I thought to remove the applications from the context menu requires special software. Unfortunately, I was wrong. You can do that directly from registry.

When we are talking about registry, many of us are scared because registry is the core of our system. If we messing up the registry, we are actually messing up our operating system. Therefore, please make a backup of your registry before you continue. You don’t want to reformat your PC would you?

To edit the right-click menu, go to Start > Run and type “regedit” (without the quotes). Then click Ok. There are two parts that I will discuss here. The first part is about to remove the applications from files context menu and the second part is to remove the applications from the folder context menu.

Part 1: Files context menu

While you are in the Registry Editor, go to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\

You will see something like this

These are the applications that you see when you right click a file. You can either delete the application folder or you can just disable them. But I prefer to disable just incase I want it back in the future.

To disable the application, click on the application folder and in the key panel, right click the key name and choose Modify. Let say that the Value Data is like this

{D25B2CAB-8A9A-4517-A9B2-CB5F68A5A802}

What you need to do is just add a minus (-) in front of the value like this

-{D25B2CAB-8A9A-4517-A9B2-CB5F68A5A802}

Click Ok, refresh and try right clicking on any file. Now you will see the unwanted application has been removed from the context menu.

Part 2: Folders context menu

How about for the folder? The steps are the same but the directory to the shell extension is different. You need to go to this tree,

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\

Here, you will see the applications that attached on the context menu. You can either delete the application folder or just disable like you did for the files.

In the key panel, right click the key name, choose Modify and add the minus in front of the value. Click Ok and refresh. Now right click on any folder and there application has gone from the right click menu.

To give you a better understanding about how to do it, I have included a video in this post. This video will show you how to disable the WinRAR from the right click menu. Enjoy!

I am very a systematic person (I guess I am). If something is not in order, I will rearrange it. This also apply to my drives letter in My Computer. Sometimes my Windows XP will change my USB drive letter and not in alphabetically order. Sometimes the Mobile Connect drive letter is J: and sometimes it is K:. Depending on which device it detects first.

I prefer for the Mobile Connect drive letter to stick with J: so if I insert a thumb drive, Windows will set the drive letter accordingly. J:, K:, L: and so on. But if Mobile Connect drive letter is not J:, I will change the drive letter by using Computer Managementtool.

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management. Now, under Storage, click on Disk Management. It will display all drives and removable storages found on your PC.

Let say I want to change my thumb drive letter which is Cypher256Mb (K) to Cypher256Mb(L). I right click the volume and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths… Then I click on the Change button and choose L: from the dropdown list. And then, click Ok to accept the changes. Now, my thumb drive letter has changed to L:.

It is really easy to change drive letter. But be warned! Don’t ever change the Windows drive letter. I don’t know what will happen but I am sure you will be in lot of trouble if you do so.

I really want to use Ubuntu. When new version is out, I will request free CDs from Ubuntu Shipit and will receive the CDs after two weeks from the request date. But yesterday, after struggling to install new hard drive into my PC, then I was successfully install Ubuntu and make it dual boot with my Windows XP.

My Ubuntu specs

It is really difficult for me to set them to dual boot from two different hard drive. My old hard drive has Windows XP installed and the new hard drive which 320Gb size, installed with Ubuntu. I only allocate 20Gb for Ubuntu. The rest of the empty space is for files storage.

How to make them dual boot?

To make dual boot using two hard drives, you must plug out your Windows hard drive first and make Ubuntu hard drive as Master. Slip in the Ubuntu CD and run the installation from it.

Once the Ubuntu has succesfully installed on to your Ubuntu drive, boot into your Ubuntu. Login with your username and password, and open up Terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal). Enter this line by line into the Terminal.

Note: We use “sudo” because we want to do our job as administrator.

cd /boot/grub
sudo cp menu.lst menu.lst_backup
sudo gedit menu.lst

The first line changes our directory to /boot/grub/. The second line is to make a backup copy of menu.lst file. The last line is use to edit menu.lst file.

Next, copy the below code

title Microsoft Windows XP
root (hd1,0)
savedefault
makeactive
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1

and paste it above

###BEGIN AUTOMATIC KERNEL LIST###

But if you want to make Ubuntu as your default OS, you can paste the code at the end of the file. We need to copy the above code into our menu.lst file because Windows does not like to be Slave. So we use this trick to fool it.

Then, what we need to do is, we want to display the Grub Menu when we boot up our PC. To do this, find

hiddenmenu

and replace with

#hiddenmenu

This step is optional. The default Timeout is 3 but I changed it to 10. You can set any numbers you want.

Then, save menu.lst file. Now, shut down your PC and plug back your Windows hard drive. Make sure that you set Windows hard drive as Slave because we want Grub to take care of the boot process.

Boot your PC and you will see, Microsoft Windows XP at the top line in the list. Below the line you will Ubuntu kernel. Choose your selection to proceed the boot process.

Why using this method?

There are many ways to make dual boot using two hard drives. But for me, I choose this way because if I want to format Ubuntu or if Ubuntu corrupted, I still have Windows boot manager to take care the process. And if I want to format Windows, I still have Grub to take care the boot process. Other than that, by doing this way, we does not touch any of our Windows settings. So our Windows is safe.

If you need support, you can go to this Ubuntu thread to discuss with other Ubuntu users. I learn a lot from them.
