How to print a list of directories and files in Windows?

Today I received a request from a customer asking me to provide him a list of directories and files from his Windows laptop. It is an easy task if there is only one folder and three files but unfortunately, there are hundreds of folders and thousands of files in a Windows operating system.

Luckily, I found a solution how to print out the list. To do that, I’m using Karen’s Directory Printer. It can prints the list of directories and files into a hardcopy or to a text file.

Karen’s Directory Printer can print the name of every file and folder on a drive, along with the file’s size, date and time of modification, attributes (Read-Only, Hidden, System and Archive). The list of files can also be sorted by name, size, date created, date last modified, or date of last access.

  1. wouldn’t it be better to use manual methods than rely on external software ??

    see here :

  2. There are peoples who are not techie like some of us here. They prefer to install a software that can do everything for them.

Anyway, thanks for the link. 🙂

  3. very good info, I will try Karen directory printer.

  4. Sandeep Jopat says:

There is a native command to do this work…
Open command prompt, and navigate to root directory “C:\”
    Then type in :dir > list.txt /s”
This command will create a file called list.txt on C drive and it will have a list of all the files and folders on C drive…

  5. Directory Report is another good tool to print a list of directories and files
